Introuction:

The General Medical Council (GMC) is the independent regulator for doctors, physician associates (PAs), and anaesthesia associates (AAs) in the UK. We uphold high standards of medical practice to protect patients and maintain public confidence in healthcare professionals.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) is a separate body within GMC that conducts hearings to assess whether medical professionals remain fit to practise.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a qualified solicitor or barrister to join us as Head of Case Management and Hearing Preparation. In this senior leadership role, you will oversee the teams responsible for preparing tribunal hearings, making fair and robust case management decisions, and empanelling tribunals.

Your leadership will ensure that hearings are conducted efficiently and justly, safeguarding the integrity of the regulatory process. You will coordinate closely with other teams to guarantee they have all necessary information for effective hearing administration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage teams that handle tribunal case listings, preparation, and panel empanelling.
  • Make timely and fair case management decisions to support the smooth progression of hearings.
  • Ensure administrative processes comply with legal and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across MPTS and GMC to streamline hearing operations.

Requirements:

To succeed in this role, you will need:

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Must be a qualified solicitor or barrister entitled to practise in England and Wales.
  • Minimum of 5 years post-qualification legal experience.
  • Must meet and maintain the requirements of their regulatory body (e.g., SRA or Bar Council).

Experience

  • Proven track record of senior-level leadership in legal case management or tribunal settings.
  • Experience in preparing and overseeing administrative hearings or regulatory casework.
  • Background in resolving legal disputes, managing risk, and interpreting complex regulations.
  • Previous experience working in complex and high-stakes environments, preferably in healthcare, government, or professional regulation.
