Our modern Health Centre is staffed by a highly qualified medical team including a residential Registered General Nurse, physiotherapist, and counsellor. We work closely with local healthcare providers such as Attenborough Surgery and Bushey Pharmacy to deliver excellent care to our students.
Role Details:
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced School Nurse to manage the Health Centre and provide comprehensive medical and welfare support to our boarding community during term time. This role involves delivering first aid, managing chronic conditions, coordinating medical appointments, and ensuring compliance with all clinical and statutory health standards.
You will be the primary medical contact for students, staff, and parents and will coordinate with external healthcare providers as needed. This is a unique opportunity to work in a close-knit educational environment where your skills will make a significant impact.
Responsibilities:
- Provide first aid and emergency care to students and staff promptly and effectively.
- Assess, manage, and monitor minor illnesses and injuries.
- Administer prescribed and non-prescribed medications according to medical protocols.
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records using Medical Tracker software.
- Develop and manage individual care plans for students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, epilepsy).
- Conduct routine health screenings (vision, hearing, BMI).
- Deliver health education workshops alongside colleagues on hygiene, nutrition, mental health, substance misuse, and other age-appropriate topics.
- Manage daily Health Centre operations, including coordinating staff activities and maintaining clinical compliance.
- Ensure adherence to all relevant statutory health and safety, safeguarding, and clinical standards.
- Serve as the key liaison with parents and guardians regarding student health issues.
- Coordinate off-site medical appointments and collaborate with GPs, dentists, hospitals, and mental health services.
- Provide medical input for school trips, including risk assessments and travel medication.
- Participate in school INSET and deliver annual refresher training on first aid and health topics.
- Support whole school events as required.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration.
- Proven experience working with children or young people, ideally within a boarding school or similar educational setting.
- Additional qualifications or experience in mental health nursing or child and adolescent mental health are highly desirable.
- Strong clinical skills combined with excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency and challenging situations.
- Competent in using health record systems, with a willingness to adopt new technologies (e.g., Medical Tracker).
- Knowledge of safeguarding practices and commitment to promoting student welfare.
