About the Role:
We are looking for an experienced and compassionate Welfare Benefits Advisor to join our Accredited Quality Standards (AQS) team. This newly funded position is a two-year fixed-term contract, designed to support people affected by cancer across the Cardiff & Vale Health Board area.
You’ll deliver one-on-one welfare benefits advice, supporting individuals in understanding and claiming their entitlements following a cancer diagnosis. Your work will take place in hospital settings (including University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough) and remotely, giving you a hybrid work structure that supports flexibility and balance.
This role is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and delivered in partnership with Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, enabling you to make a real difference in patients’ lives during a time they need it most.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide Benefits Advice
- Offer accurate, up-to-date advice to clients on a wide range of welfare benefits, including Universal Credit, PIP, ESA, Housing Benefit, and Disability Living Allowance.
- Client Case Management
- Manage a personal caseload independently, maintaining clear, confidential, and accurate records of all client interactions and outcomes.
- Benefit Applications
- Assist clients in completing benefit application forms and ensure all supporting documentation is submitted correctly and on time.
- Appeals and Tribunals
- Support clients in challenging benefit decisions, including preparing for and representing them at appeal hearings and tribunals when needed.
- Liaise with External Agencies
- Work in partnership with hospitals, local authorities, charities (e.g. Macmillan, Citizens Advice), and community services to ensure coordinated support for clients.
- Advocacy and Representation
- Act as an advocate for clients when dealing with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), local councils, and other statutory bodies.
- Outreach and Engagement
- Meet with clients in hospitals, community centres, or via phone/video calls, ensuring services are accessible to vulnerable individuals.
- Policy Awareness

- Training and Reporting

Eligibility Criteria:
- Proven experience in delivering specialist welfare benefits advice, ideally within health or cancer care (but not essential).
- In-depth knowledge of DWP procedures, Universal Credit, PIP, Attendance Allowance, and benefits appeals.
- Ability to manage a complex caseload with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills and a sensitive, empathetic approach.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse client groups and vulnerable individuals.
